GROWING UP HOLLYWOOD TAKES A VIVID SNAPSHOT OF THE HOLLYWOOD THEY NEVER SHOW YOU IN THE MOVIES
TARA BOTEL DOHERTY’S BOOK GROWING UP HOLLYWOOD SHOWS HOW DECEIVING PERFECT PICTURES CAN BE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Los Angeles, CA — Author Tara Botel Doherty renders a vivid picture of what it was like to grow up in legendary make-believe Hollywood in the ’70s in the short story collection Growing Up Hollywood. Growing Up Hollywood officially releases May 27th, 2019.
Growing Up Hollywood reveals the face of the 1970’s Hollywood they never show you in the movies, the way it used to be before gentrification and big business development.
For people around the world, Hollywood is the land of hopes, dreams, and make-believe. Anything can happen on its tarnished and run-down streets, especially on the Boulevard in the 1970’s. But for Annie and Gracie, sisters aged 7 and 10, this is the place where they learn about life and people. As their mother and father edge toward divorce, these two young girls try to make sense of their lives amid the domestic chaos in their home on an unfriendly, dead-end street in the Hollywood Hills.
Throughout their adventures, as they grow up among the famous Hollywood landmarks, the two sisters find out that although a picture may look perfect, pictures are often deceiving.
Growing Up Hollywood depicts the Boulevard with its tacky and sometimes shady establishments, and the patrons who inhabit them. It portrays the eccentrics looking for fame and fortune among the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The snapshots are short vignettes recalling businesses that existed for decades along Hollywood Boulevard where its connection to its past glory still existed.
Ultimately, Growing Up Hollywood is more than a sharp photograph of one of the most famous places on Earth. It shows how our environment shapes our character. It is a reminder that we need to look passed the glitter and shine to find meaning and joy.
